Making Kids a Priority on the National Policy Agenda

In Response to the Events of January 6

The events of January 6 in Washington, DC, were alarming and terrifying – for adults and children alike. While Leading for Kids is a non-partisan organization, we denounce any attack on our democratic institutions, as well as any attempt to unlawfully interfere with our country’s constitutional processes.

Leading for Kids seeks to create a society that more deeply values children. We believe that changing how we talk about kids, how we invest in their futures, and how we collectively protect their rights and reflect their voices is necessary to ensure that all children and young people thrive and grow up into healthy adults. The health and well-being of kids are not partisan issues.

Our children have suffered indescribable consequences of our actions and inactions, which have only deepened during the past year: educational and health inequities exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic; increasing poverty and hunger; the continuing effects of racial injustice; and living with the impact of global climate change. And now, our kids have witnessed an attack on the Capitol building in Washington, DC—while viewing images of white supremacy within its halls—and the disruption of processes that make up the foundation of our democracy and bedrock of our nation.

We can do better. We must do better. It is imperative that at this time, and moving forward, we center children and young people in our decision-making processes and hold our elected leaders accountable for their actions.
